CHENEY WATCH......SMOKING GUN UPDATE......NOON NEWS UPDATE......
Based on recent comments by Bush idea man Karl Rove, here's what the Texas governor plans to talk about each week between the end of the convention and election day: Monday, education, Tuesday, social security, Wednesday, tax cuts, Thursday, the military, and Friday, faith-based welfare. Since Rove will try to make do with just those five issues, one supposes that Saturday will be taken up with drives around the ranch and Sunday will be church day. In other words, Rove is simply going back to the KISS playbook (Keep it simple for stupid.) used during the gubernatorial campaigns when Bush campaigned on four issues and avoided all unscripted events like the plague. The idea was to get a lead on the basis of money, spin, family, and corporate connections, make your most conservative social and economic speeches early when only the political meat-eaters are paying attention, then sit on your lead and talk mush (vacuous generalities that sound moderate) while running out the clock. Tomorrow: Will Gore let Bush get away with that? Meanwhile, click on the links below to read what Bush has said and done about the five issues upon which he's pinning his presidential hopes. --Politex, 8/1/00

SMOKING GUN? $173 MILLION IN FED FUNDS FOR CHILDRENS' WELFARE SHIFTED INTO GENERAL FUNDS (AGAINST FEDERAL REGULATIONS) TO COVER PART OF BUSH $1.7 BILLION TAX CUT.
As of today, the Texas Legislature, with the advice and consent of the Bush Governor's Office, has spent $11 million in Federal money to shift an additional $162 million in Federal money into Bush's tax cut account, upon which Bush has built his presidential campaign. And since the Legislature broke Federal guidelines in doing so, it might very well cost Texas taxpayers another $173 million, all, ultimately, for Bush's presidential campaign. The initial $11 million was spent to free up $162 million that would normally fund Texas children's programs. This money, already lost and not used for tax cuts, could have paid for health insurance for over 10,000 kids who are in need of it right now. --Politex, 7/31/00 (more)
Records show legislators admit that if their plan was unacceptable to the Feds after the fact, they would stall until the 2001 session. Meanwhile they would face a "potentially hobbling state government with a monumental budget shortfall." They were willing to risk all of this to provide Governor Bush with the largest tax cut possible to be used as a presidential campaign issue. What did Bush know and when did he know it? --Politex, 7/27/00 --((more))
While the Dems are getting ready to attack Dick Cheney's Sec. of Defense record of opposition to gays in the military, Mary Cheney, his 31 year-old daughter has recently quit her job as a corporate relations manager for the gay and lesbian community at, of all places, Coors Beer. (The Coors family publicly espouses the most conservative values in the beer industry.) Mr. Cheney has been quoted as saying, ""I have operated on the basis over the years with respect to my personal staff that I don't ask them about their private lives. As long as they perform their professional responsibilities in a responsible manner, their private lives are their business." While Mary Cheney has been a subject of concern within the Bush camp, Bush, himself, has yet to comment upon it. According to one report, a Bush spokesman said this week,
""The governor believes Mr. Cheney has a wonderful family. Being gay or lesbian is not a liability in this campaign. The governor embraces both of Mr. Cheney’s daughters and will invite them to campaign with him." Like nephew Pea's exclusive campaigning among Hispanics, openly gay Mary Cheney would be used exclusively to campaign within the gay and lesbian community. While word of these circumstances has not yet reached Governor Bush's "Bob Jones" voting bloc, we await their responses to this latest turn of events.--Politex, 7/26/00 (Photo. Lynn Cheney, right, with her two daughters, Mary, left, and Elizabeth, center.)
IT'S OFFICIAL. POPPY PARTY IS NOW COMPLETE WITH TWO TEXAS OIL MILLIONAIRES, BOTH EX-MEMBERS OF DAD'S ADMINISTRATION
In a flag-drenched campaign pep rally of cheering students in the confines of the Burnt Orange Room at the University of Texas's basketball stadium, the Frank Erwin Center, George and Laura Bush officially welcomed Dick and Lynne Cheney to the Bush campaign for the presidency. Since Cheney is a well-known hawk and ex-Secretary of Defense, it's interesting to note that we have yet to hear a word from Bush's non-hawk foreign policy adviser and aspirant for the key role of White House adviser, Condi Rice. Those who have checked in on the Poppy-led nomination have called Cheney an experienced conservative who knows how to get along with people. They were less forthcoming with their evaluations of Cheney's wife, the controversial Reaganite ideologue, Lynn Cheney, whose ambitions became clear when, early on in the selection process, Cheney actually recommended her to Junior as a candidate for the vice-president slot. E-mail news on the net is focused on questions of insider trading, since Cheney unloaded $5 million of his company's stock less than two months ago when the price was highest. According to today's NYT, it was then that Brent Scowcroft, Poppy's foreign policy adviser, told a surprised President Bush that Cheney was interested in being vice-president in Junior's administration. --Politex, 4 p.m. et, 7/25/00

"I did the right thing. It's a little early to project the amount of money the Legislature will be dealing with, and as you know I hope I'm not here to deal with it. I'm seeking another office." --Governor George W. Bush, on the effect of his tax cuts on the Texas budget. 7/13/00
"If you asked me, life or death, 'You've got to tell me how big the tax cut is, that George is proposing,' I couldn't tell you. I don't give a damn. Because I'm out of it. I'm out of it." --ex-President Bush, recent NYT interview
JUNIOR'S SOCIAL SECURITY PLAN
AND POPPY'S SAVINGS & LOAN SCANDAL
Governor Bush would remove the padlock from a trust fund many times bigger than the savings and loan insurance reserve. Like the deregulation of the savings and loan system, his plan is ideology-driven; the shady politics that overwhelmed his father remain in place; and in the wings are Wall Street power players who know how to extract the last nugget from a Washington gold mine. For millions of Americans Social Security benefits will continue to be all they will have for retirement. Given his family's involvement in the S&L scandal -- both as bungling decision maker and opportunists -- Governor Bush must know the peril that will arise when he removes that padlock. more. Read what's it's like to be a victim of Poppy's S&L financial fiasco here.
